Access: How do my students access Babeljar?

You provide them with a voucher code which they use to access a one-time intake form. Here, they pick their own username and password which from then on they use to access Babeljar. There are multiple "I forgot my password” solutions.

Alternatively, you can mass enroll students through means such as an Excel or csv file upload.

Advice: Do you offer didactic or educational advice?

No, but we can help you with converting your existing learning materials to 'online'.

B

Branding: Can I use my own brand in Babeljar?

Absolutely. You get your own version of Babeljar where you can have us install a template based on your brand.

C

Can I use content from a 3rd party?

Yes. You can use scorm packages, or lti content, from language course providers such as Rosetta Stone and Speexx.

Cancellation: How do I cancel my subscription?

We'll be happy to take care of it for you. Just send us an email and we'll do it for you.

Cancellation: I want to cancel my subscription. What happens to my course materials?

You can download backups of your courses to your own computer at any time, at no cost at all. Each course backup contains all the data you need: exercises, participants, marks, grades, and files. Because Babeljar is based on the world's biggest learning management system in the world, Moodle, you can restore the course backup to any Moodle installation (of the same version or higher) you want.

Conditional access: Can I restrict and unlock access to educational content based on the student’s progress?

Yes, you can have Babeljar automatically unlock educational content based on a student's progress or achievements so far. This is called 'conditional access'.

Content: Can I use education content provided by a 3rd party?

Yes, you can use so called scorm packages, or lti content, from language course providers such as Rosetta Stone and Speexx. The international scorm standard ensures that the educational content can be accessed in systems such as Babeljar.

D

Domain name: Can I use my own domain name (web address) in Babeljar?

Yes. This involves linking your domain to the webserver (computer on the Internet) where your version of Babeljar resides. Just ask us and we'll take care of it.

E

Educational activities: What kind of educational activities does Babeljar offer?

Actually, too many to list here. Check out the demo to get a taste of the possibilities: interactive exercises, multimedia content, text, video, audio, tests, having your students exercise pronunciation through their own recording with a smart phone or computer.

L

Limits: Is there a limit to the number of courses or course materials in Babeljar?

There's no limit to the number of courses. With regard to the course materials we have a 'fair use' policy: if you consume outrageous amounts of bandwidth and disk storage for your courses, we'll contact you to discuss alternative options (it's generally a better idea to offer multimedia content such as videos through YouTube or Vimeo anyway, even if you display the videos inside Babeljar).

M

Mobile: Can I use Babeljar on a mobile device, such as a phone or a tablet?

Yes. Babeljar's design is completely "responsive", as they call it in technical terms. This means the content adapts to the size of the screen. However, if you use external content (e.g. scorm packages or lti content), then it really depends on the external provider.

Monthly fee: Why do I have to pay a monthly fee during the holidays when all my students are away?

Because we're storing your courses. For that we still have to pay our own expenses even if there are currently no students.

Moodle: What’s the difference between Moodle and Babeljar?

Babeljar is based on Moodle, the world's largest learning management system. The difference between a plain vanilla Moodle installation and Babeljar is that Babeljar is especially adapted to the needs of language schools, language institutes, language teachers, and language trainers.

Technically speaking, Babeljar has a number of additional plugins to help you out with tasks such as the intake process, course evaluations, motivating students, and recruiting new students. We've also made it possible to have your students record audio and video (to facilitate pronunciation exercises, for instance).

Moodle: Where are all the buttons, links, and menu options that I see in the Moodle documentation?

We have made Babeljar far easier to use than Moodle, to accommodate new users. If you need full access to all features, just send us an email and we'll grant you admin user permissions. This will allow you to configure Babeljar to your heart's content.

O

Offline: Does Babeljar work offline?

No, it does not. Babeljar constantly keeps track of students' progress so you need to have an internet connection at all times if you're using Babeljar.

Online payments: How do I start accepting online payments in Babeljar?

Babeljar comes with a Paypal payment option. Please send us an email if you want to activate the Paypal payment option. If you need to support other online payment solutions, such as Multisafepay (Connect only), please contact us.

Out of business: What happens if you guys ever shut down?

In that case you get the entire code base of your Babeljar installation: database, files and source code. Internet consultancies will be able to get you up and running again in no time at all, because Babeljar is based on standard technology (the biggest learning management system in the world, Moodle).

But don't worry, we will never shut down Babeljar!

P

Privacy: Do other language schools or teachers have access to my courses?

No. You decide who gets to see what in your version of Babeljar. Access is controlled through a username and password.

Progress tracking: Is there a way to keep track of my students' progress?

Yes. There are reports showing you exactly how much each student spent on each activity. In addition you have the option to use traditional grades. Some learning activities, such as quizzes or tests, can automatically assign grades.

R

Refund: Can I get a refund if I cancel?

Sorry, no. We ourselves need to pay for the technical infrastructure upfront, that's why.

S

Subscription plan: How do I change my subscription plan?

If you plan on adding more students than your current subscription plan allows, just send us an email and we'll upgrade your subscription plan.

T

Target users: Is Babeljar for everyone?

Why, yes, of course! Seriously though, we've seen 3rd graders (eight year olds) and older using similar systems. Trainers and teachers sometimes need a little more instruction, depending on whether they are allowed to edit courses or not.

U

Usage: How can I use Babeljar as a language school or teacher?

Babeljar is an LMS (learning management system). As such, you can use Babeljar to support the organization of learning (class enrollment, planning, intake, evaluation) as well as learning itself through educational activities.

Babeljar can be used to mix 'traditional' language learning with e-learning (this is also called 'blended learning'). You can also offer 'pure' e-learning courses where you never get to see the student (except maybe through a webcam).

Yet another option is to use Babeljar for 'flipping the classroom' which "is a form of blended learning in which students learn content online by watching video lectures, usually at home, and homework is done in class with teachers and students discussing and solving questions” according to Wikipedia.

User limit: What happens if I have more students than my subscription plan allows?

Nothing, at first. We are not going to bill you if this happens accidentally, or during a short period of time when you're adding new students before removing the 'old' ones. We do keep track however and we'll invite you to change your subscription plan if you're consistently over your limit.

W

Web address: Can I use my own web address (domain name) in Babeljar?

Yes. This involves linking your domain to the webserver (computer on the Internet) where your version of Babeljar resides. Just ask us and we'll take care of it.
